Uncertain. De Vaan proposes a possible pre-form of the shape *skrout-, which he suggests may have yielded scrūt- (as in scrūta) in Rome and scrōt- (“rubbish”) in Latium. This proposal is nevertheless still tentative, as it is not clear whether scrōtum belongs to the same semantic family as scrūta. Regarding external Indo-European comparanda, De Vaan suggests only Germanic forms such as scrēadian (“to shred”).
