From Proto-Italic *tremō, from Proto-Indo-European *trémti, from *trem- (“tremble”). Cognate with Ancient Greek τρέμω (trémō).
tremō (present infinitive tremere, perfect active tremuī); third conjugation, no supine stem
The Carmen Saliare attests to the term tremonti, which is perhaps an archaic third-person plural form. This word may then faithfully preserve the final *-i in the PIE third-person plural ending *-nti, which was otherwise apocopated in Italic.
