From earlier whirlpoole, whirlpole, apparently from 中期英語 *whirlpole, potentially coalescing 古期英語 hwierfel (“whirlpool”) and 古期英語 hwierfepōl (“whirlpool”). Equivalent to whirl +‎ pool. Cognate with Scots quhirlepole, whirle-pule (“whirlpool”). Compare also English whirlpit.

Eclipsed non-native 中期英語 gurges (“whirlpool”), borrowed from Latin gurges (“whirlpool”).
