From Proto-Italic *atnoznā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂étnos (“year”) + *(s)h₁osnéh₂ (“harvest”), the first element equivalent to annus; compare Proto-Germanic *asnō (“harvest, earning, wage”) for the second element.
