Unknown, rare in literary Latin. Perhaps from Gaulish or Germanic, ultimately either from Proto-Indo-European *bʰedʰ- (“to stab, dig”), or a separate root *bʰat- (“to hit”); ultimately onomatopoeic. Compare Welsh bathu (“beat”), 古期英語 beadu (“battle”), and the latter half of Latin andabata, as well as perhaps Sanskrit भल्ल (bhalla, “arrowhead, missile”). Doublet of battō.
