Taken from Old Catalan cerca, itself from Vulgar Latin *circa (“surrounding structure”). Attested in the single mid-11th century Catalan document quoted below. Note the ⟨e⟩ for etymological Latin /ĭ/ as well as how it is paired with ⟨manedas⟩, another Romance word derived ultimately from Latin manēre through a Vulgar Latin *manita, showing both /ĭ/ > /e/ and /-t-/ > /d/.
