In ancient Greece, hetaerae (singular
/hɪˈtaɪrə/, plural
/hɪˈtaɪriː/; in Greek ἑταῖραι, hetairai) were courtesans, that is to say, highly educated, sophisticated companions. They are often wrongly confused as prostitutes.
