体内で白血球または他の細胞により作られる蛋白で、関連する蛋白の群に含まれる。インターロイキン-2はtリンパ球の一種により作られる。他のtリンパ球とbリンパ球の増殖や活動性を高め、免疫系の発達に影響を及ぼす。アルデスロイキン（製造ラボで合成されたインターロイキン-2）は、がん治療で免疫系の機能を高めるための生物学的反応修飾物質として用いられる。インターロイキン-2はサイトカインの一種である。「il-2」とも呼ばれる。
