Uncertain. De Vaan suggests that the term may represent a denominative verb built to a perfect participle *vexus, which may also be the source of convexus and dēvexus. According to De Vaan, the element *vexus may itself have originally been the perfect past participle to vehō, itself from Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ-. Alternatively, De Vaan suggests that it may have originated as an s-present to the same root. Nussbaum suggests that the term may be a sā-present, meaning that it may have originated as a denominative to a noun formed from an s-present to the root *weǵʰ-.
