Solrad 10, also known as Explorer 44, is a satellite launched as part of the Solrad and Explorer programs. The SOLar RADiation satellite program (SOLRAD) is conceived in the late 1950s to study the Sun's effects on Earth, particularly during periods of heightened solar activity. Earlier Solrad satellites served as a cover project for the Project Dyno ELINT intelligence satellites with the covernames GRAB and POPPY operated by the United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Solrad 10 is launched on July 8, 1971. It is spin-stabilized at 60 rpm and oriented with its spin axis perpendicular to the Sun-satellite line. The solar X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) photometers are pointed radially outward from its equator to view the Sun with each revolution. The ion chambers are sampled with a time resolution of one minute. Solrad 10 mapped the celestial sphere using its high sensitivity X-ray detector.
