Lupton and Adamthwaite brewery was purchased in 1861 by John Mayor Threlfall. Threlfalls were registered as a Liverpool based brewer in 1888. In around 1895, Threlfalls purchased the Blue Lion (previously White Lion and Apollo) pub on Cook Street in Salford and built the Salford brewery. It merged with Chesters in 1961 operating from the Cook St site as Chester's and Threlfall's brewery. Whitbread took over the entire Threlfall's Group in 1967, including the Moorhouses soft drinks company, and the Salford site became surplus to requirement in 1999. The brewery's Head Office, main brewery and bottling plant was based in Trueman Street in Liverpool, and it also was closed down by Whitbread at an earlier date. At the time of the 1967 takeover Threlfall's was the 8th largest brewery in the UK, and the largest to be based in the North West of England. The takeover raised Whitbread, a predominantly southern based business, to be the second largest brewery in the UK.
