equihopper (plural equihoppers)

1. (chess) A hopper piece that must jump a piece (the hurdle) to move, and lands an equal distance after the hurdle as the distance before the hurdle, in any direction; it may capture on its final square. It can only jump one piece, though this restriction does not apply to hippogonal moves.

     In problems with unorthodox pieces the convention is usually followed that they have appeared by promotion of pawns, though this is not sufficient in some cases (e.g. alfils and equihoppers may not be able to get to the required square from the promotion rank). […] The L-hopper (GPJ Chessics #10 1980) is like an equihopper but moves at right angles, to left or right, both halves of the move being the same length.
