From Proto-Italic *rigā- (“to lead toward”), either from Proto-Indo-European *Hreyǵ- (“to stretch tight, bind”) (whence rigeō (“I am stiff”)) or Proto-Indo-European *h₃reǵ- (“straighten”) (whence regō (“I rule, guide”)). The *Hreyǵ- hypothesis yields the simplest explanation of the i in the Latin word, and would indicate that the i is in the original form of the root.
