From 中期英語 clege, from Old Norse kleggi. Cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk klegg. Possibly ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *glōgʰ-s (“point”); compare Ancient Greek γλωχίς (glōkhís, “barb”).
