Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰreh₁g- (“to smell”). De Vaan derives it as a denominative verb in -ō, -āre from a hypothetical Italic adjective *fragros, itself from *bʰrh₁g-ro-, from *bʰreh₁g- + *-ro-.
