From god + fearing, likely an alteration of 中期英語 goddfrihti (“god-fearing”, literally “god-frighty”) and god-friht (“god-fearing”) (whence modern English god-fright), from 古期英語 godfyrht (“god-fearing”). Compare Old High German gotforht (“god-fearing”).

From God + fearing, likely a continuation (in altered form) of earlier 中期英語 goddfrihti, gode-frigti (“god-fearing”), variants of 中期英語 godfriht, gode-friht, godfruht, god-furht, from 古期英語 godfyrht, godefriht (“god-fearing”). Cognate with Gothic 𐌲𐌿𐌳𐌰𐍆𐌰𐌿𐍂𐌷𐍄𐍃 (gudafaurhts, “god-fearing, devout”).
