用例

• 皆あの人を恐れている
  Everybody fears that man

• 彼は権力があるから恐れられる
  He is feared because he is powerful―（他動詞構文にすれば）―His power makes him feared.
• 彼は残酷なことをして人に恐れられようとする

• 失敗を恐れて試みない
  He does not try （for fear） lest he should fail―for fear he may fail―for fear of failure.
• 日本の学生は英語を話すのに間違ったことを言うことを恐れている
  Japanese students are afraid of making mistakes in speaking English.
• 間違いを恐れて英語を話さない
  They do not speak English for fear of making mistakes
  They are afraid to speak English.
• 彼は発見されるのを恐れていた
  He was afraid lest he should be discovered
  He was apprehensive of discovery.
