From Proto-Italic *rēōr, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂reh₁- (“to think”), reanalysed root of *h₂er- (“to put together”), in which case it would be cognate with Ancient Greek ἀριθμός (arithmós, “a number”), Old Irish rád (“saying”), Albanian radhë (“queue, row”), Old Church Slavonic радити (raditi, “to care for”), Sanskrit राध्नोति (rādhnoti, “to succeed”) and Ossetian рад (rad, “peace”).
