    From 古期英語 sċēawian, from Proto-West Germanic *skauwōn, from Proto-Germanic *skawwōną, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewh₁-.

    Forms such as the AB language's schawin, especially characteristic of the West Midlands, reflect a shift of stress to the second element of 古期英語 /æ͜ɑː/; later schowen (the source of modern show) is a continuation of this form with the usual non-Northern development of the /ɑːw/ resulting from the stress-shift into the diphthong /ɔu̯/.
