Bandaranaike International Airport (also known as Katunayake International Airport and Colombo International Airport) (IATA: CMB, ICAO: VCBI) is Sri Lanka's only international airport at the moment. Mattala International Airport, when it gets built will be the second International Airport of Sri Lanka. It is located in Katunayake, 35 km (22 mi) north of Colombo. It is administered by Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd. It is the hub of SriLankan Airlines, the national carrier of Sri Lanka, and Mihin Lanka, the budget airline of Sri Lanka. It handled close to 4.2 million passengers in 2009 and is expected to handle nearly 6 million passengers in 2011. It has the capacity to handle up to 8 million passengers. "BIA" has an accommodation capacity of 25 aircraft on the apron complimenting the movement of 25 aircraft per hour on the runway. The airport now handles 3,354 monthly scheduled flights, excluding charter flights. The single runway has a capacity of 42,000 aircraft movements a year. A total of 32 airlines now uses the airport with Aeroflot expected to resume flights soon. The total cargo handling capacity is 300,000 MT annually. In April, the Airport announced the acquisition of 100 hectares of land to build a parallel runway required to handle growing aircraft traffic that could soon saturate existing capacity. A parallel runway close to the present one was not desirable owing to safety concerns. The construction of a parallel runway would help airlines reduce costs with less fuel and more payload.
