First attested in 1568 in the Bishops' Bible translation (see quotations); earlier English Bible translations instead used “of Elkosh”. From 中期英語 Helcesei, borrowed from Vulgar Latin Helcesei, from Ancient Greek Έλκεσαίου (Élkesaíou), from Hebrew אֶלְקֹשִׁי.
