Giorgio Morandi (July 20, 1890 – June 18, 1964) was an Italian painter and printmaker who specialized in still life. The apparent simplicity of his subjects (vases, bottles, bowls, flowers, landscapes) are exalted by the quality of the painting. Quiet, of noble background, polite both in his private and public life, Morandi was much talked about in Bologna for his enigmatic yet very optimistic personality. Morandi lived on via Fondazza, in Bologna, with his mother and three sisters Anna, Dina and Maria Teresa who stayed with him until his death. Morandi, during the final days of his life, was bedridden, but continued to trace in the air the shapes that would have been the next evolution of his painting career had he not died.
