語源

Borrowed from Tongan Fisi (historically pronounced with a palatal affricate, IPA: [ˈfit͡ʃi]), itself borrowed from Fijian Viti, from Proto‐Central Pacific *viti ‘east, sunrise’. The English spelling ‘Fiji’ was popularized by Captain James Cook’s phonetic transcription of the 18th‐century Tongan pronunciation.

使用する際の注意点

Because English speakers adapted both vowels as long, heavy IPA: /iː/ sounds, ‘Fiji’ acts as a spondee in that language. This causes stress fluctuation: speakers of North American English typically apply default first‐syllable noun stress (IPA: /ˈfiː.d͡ʒi/), which coincidentally preserves the rhythmic pattern of the indigenous etymons. Conversely, speakers in the UK and Australia typically apply final‐syllable stress, a common pattern for foreign place names ending in heavy vowels (IPA: /fiːˈd͡ʒiː/).
