【医療】《米》(月額固定会費前払診療/現物給付システムの)会員制民間健康維持組織，HMO((自発的に加入する会員（加入者enrollee）に，「前払月額固定会費prepaid flat monthly membership fee」（＝保険料）の対価として“予防preventive/初期primary/総合general”診療を含めた「総合的医療サービスcomprehensive health care」を現物給付するシステムの“医療組織”でありかつ“医療保険”でもある．経営形態は営利/非営利の両方がある．非営利組織で最大のHMOは，カリフォルニア州を本拠とするカイザー・パーマネンティで，その経営体のスポンサーには大企業/労組/病院/メディカルスクールがなっている．80年代に入ると，「効率管理型医療managed care」型HMOの直接管理運営に乗り出した健保会社やBC/BSが大手のスポンサーとなった．立法面では'73年に「連邦HMO法」が制定されている．90年代に入り，「純粋（または伝統的）HMO」は停滞し，代わって急上昇し始めたのが「開放型HMO」または「受療時点HMO」である；略HMO；⇒AAHP, GHAA, HIAA, managed care, MCO, open-ended HMO, PGP, POSHMO, PPO, SHMO))
