From German Bikini, the colonial name of the atoll as part of German New Guinea, and this was derived from Marshallese Pikinni.
Bikini
While the word bikini, in reference to the swimsuit, usually has just one pronunciation stressed on the second syllable, the English place name Bikini has two pronunciations. /ˈbɪkɪni/ is the older pronunciation stressed on the first syllable, and is still widely used in English by those most familiar with the atoll. /bɪˈkiːni/ is a newer pronunciation stressed on the second syllable, influenced by the swimsuit term.

The bikini is typically a women's two-piece swimsuit. One part of the attire covers the breasts; the other the groin and part or all of the buttocks, leaving an uncovered area between the two. Merriam–Webster describes the bikini as "a woman's scanty two-piece bathing suit" or "a man's brief swimsuit". It is often worn in hot weather, while swimming or sunbathing. The shapes of both parts of a bikini resemble women's underwear, and the lower part can range from revealing thong or g-string to briefs.
