By haplology from earlier *septemo-mēmbris (“of または pertaining to the seventh month”), from Proto-Italic *septemo-mēnzris, from septem (“seven”) + *mēnsris, from mens- (“month”) + -ris. In the Roman calendar, the year began with mārtius (“March”), and september was the seventh month of the year.
