Onomatopoeic, compare Ancient Greek βύας (búas), Bulgarian буч (buč), Old Armenian բու (bu), Persian بوف (buf), Arabic بُوم (būm), Classical Syriac ܒܐܘܐ (baʾwāʾ) and Caucasian languages such as Old Georgian ბუვი (buvi), Chechen бухӏа (buha), and Aghul бу́гьу (búhu), all meaning owls.
