1. (of produce) Raised or cultivated at home, on one's own land, or in one's own country; domestic; indigenous. [from 1640s]

   Each spring they planted a garden and each summer they enjoyed homegrown vegetables.

2. (by extension) Produced or coming from one's own country or a particular place; local; native; self-produced. [from 1730s]

   The young politician is a homegrown talent we are all proud of here.

     One had never stepped in a rowing boat until 2008, the other will return to serve in the Royal Artillery in September. But Glover and Stanning will now go down in the record books as the first homegrown gold medallists of the London 2012 Olympics.

2. (by extension, derogatory) A native citizen of a country, especially a criminal, who has an ethnic, cultural and/or religious background that is different from the country’s historical majority, and is therefore perceived as foreign despite formal citizenship.
