nec (“not”) + ōtium (“leisure”), perhaps a calque of Ancient Greek ἀσχολίᾱ (askholíā, “lack of leisure; business, occupation”), though if indeed a calque, it is strange that the Greek was not calqued as *in-ōtium instead.
