From Proto-Italic *kalēō, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱelh₁- (“to be hot”). Compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćarHáts, whence Sanskrit शरद् (śarad, “autumn”) and Persian سال (sâl, “year”), as well as Latvian silts (“warm”) and Welsh clyd (“id”).
