Origin uncertain. Either from gull (“to dupe, trick, fool”) + -ible; or alternatively from 中期英語 gole, goll, gol (“an unfledged bird, silly fellow”), perhaps from Old Norse gulr (“yellow, pale”), from the hue of its down.
