From 中期英語 slymy, slimi, either derived from the 古期英語 noun slīm or an unattested *slīmiġ, replacing 古期英語 slipiġ (“slippy, slimy”). Equivalent to slime + -y. Cognate with Dutch slijmig, slijmerig (“slimy”), German schleimig (“slimy; smarmy”), Swedish slemmig (“slimy”).
