Festus Gontebanye Mogae (born 21 August 1939) is a former President of Botswana, having served from 1998 to 2008. He succeeded Quett Masire as President in 1998 and was reelected in October 2004; after ten years in office, he stepped down in 2008 and was succeeded by Lieutenant General Ian Khama. Mogae is of kalanga descent, or Western Shona. This kalanga group is called Badhalaunda, named after their King Dhalaunda. (Motalaote in tswana) and his native language is kalanga/western Shona. The bakalanga are the most numerical in Serowe, where he comes from, and the Dhalaunda or Batalaote branch have completely lost their kalanga dialect and speak setswana, the language of the dominant Ngwato Tribe but the rest of the bakalanga there still speak the kalanga language.
