Lewis M. Branscomb (born August 17, 1926 in Asheville, North Carolina) is an American physicist. He received his PhD from Harvard in 1949. He is the Professor emeritus of Public Policy and Corporate Management, in the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Professor Branscomb has a long history of triple services to government, academia and industry. He was Director of the National Bureau of Standards before he joined IBM as Vice President and Chief Scientist. One of his accomplishments that he takes pride in is that he personally set up JILA, which has produced three Nobel laureates. JILA is a joint institute of the University of Colorado and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Formerly the National Bureau of Standards). JILA is located on the CU campus. As a manifestation of his otherness, he has played an active role in the Presidential campaigns of at least two US candidates: Michael Dukakis (1988) and Barack Obama (2008). His son Harvie is married to a Japanese girl. Professor Branscomb travels widely and is a good friend of many nations, such as Japan, China and France. For example, Industrializing Knowledge--Linkages Between Industry and Universities in Japan and the United States a book that grew out of academic gatherings by American and Japanese scholars and that Professor Branscomb edited, was translated by Dr. Hongyi Yin of Xinhua News Agency and Dr. Jun Su of Tsinghua University, who studied with him at Harvard in 2002, and published in China by Xinhua Publishing House on January 1, 2003 and gave a boost to China's drive for technological innovation. It was originally published by MIT Press at the turn of the century.
