Silliman Institute was originally founded in 1852 as Silliman Collegiate Institute in Clinton, LA. It operated as an all girls college between the years of 1852 and 1866, even during the Civil War. Louisiana State University did not even remain open during this time. In 1866 the campus was donated to the Louisiana Presbytery and was known as Silliman College until 1931 when the school was shut down due to economic issues and a declination of enrollment. The campus was used by the Louisiana Presbytery between 1934 and 1960 as the site of their annual summer conferences. The costs eventually became too much to keep up with for the school. A group of local parents opened the school for grades 1st through 7th in 1966 after the public schools in East Feliciana Parish were ordered to integrate by the Federal courts, thus Silliman Institute could be considered to have been founded as a "segregation academy." Silliman was expanded to include high school in 1967.
