Ultimately probably from Cumbric; compare Cumbrian personal names like Gospatrick, Gososwald and Gosmungo, meaning “servant of Saint [N]” (compare Breton, Cornish, Welsh gwas (“servant, lad, boy”). Jackson suggests that it may be a survival of the original Proto-Celtic form of the word in –o- (i.e. *uɸo-sto[9]). However this has been disputed.
