From Powhatan makasin,[1] mockasin,[2] mawhcasuns (複数形), from Proto-Algonquian *maxkeseni.[3] The word is cognate with Massachusett mohkisson, mokussin, Mi'kmaq mksɨn, Munsee mahkusin, Ojibwe makizin.[1]
It has been suggested that sense 4 (“North 米国用法 snake”) may be derived from a different Native American word.[1]
