       The inner of the two is called the windpipe (trachea), which belongs to the lungs and the heart. During eating, the epiglottis covers this one while breath and voice pass through it, lest drink or food should stray into the wrong channel and cause choking. The other, outer one is rightly called the esophagus, through which food and drink descend. This leads to the stomach, and the stomach to the belly. The epiglottis covers the windpipe in turn whenever only breath or voice passes through, lest an untimely stagnation of the bowels causes obstruction. The arteria consists of cartilage and flesh; the esophagus consists of sinew and flesh.
