   • c. 550 CE, Cassiodorus, Historia ecclesiastica 6.46:

     Quod ille nōluit neque supplicantibus est misertus neque mente percēpit, quia vincere quidem bonum est, supervincere nimis invidiōsum, crēdēns præcipuē magi[cī]s artibus, quās ei Macedonis philosophus exhibēbat, et arbitrātus Alexandrī Macedonis sē glōriam perceptūrum aut certē potiōrem.

     What he refused, showing no mercy to the suppliants nor grasping it in his mind—since to conquer is indeed good, but to over-conquer is excessively hateful—he did because he placed his trust especially in the magic arts shown to him by a Macedonian philosopher, believing that he would achieve the glory of Alexander the Macedonian, or perhaps something even greater.
