語源
By surface analysis, syn- + -o- + glyph, modeled after homoglyph; coined circa 1990 by an ICANN working group that needed a term for the concept in the course of its work. Not widely used in the 35 years that followed; as of 2026, use remains uncommon but not unheard of.

A synoglyph is one of a group of glyphs that look different but have the same meaning or function. e.g. In the English language, where case has little significance, the upper and lower case forms of a letter could be considered to be synoglyphs of each other — and for many purposes […]

2009 October, Cary Karp, quoting Debbie Garside, “Subject: RE: language question re: IDNs”, in online mailing list:
-
Quoting Debbie: Within translation new terminology can create problems. I think I would advise to change to a term that can at least be found in the OED [Oxford English Dictionary] giving translators a chance of finding an equivalent. The homoglyph/synoglyph terminology was adopted by an ICANN working group entirely separate from the IDNA w.g. [working group]. It is being used in their context as an intermediate expedient to clarify the group's own thinking, with the intention of jettisoning all such high-falutin' verbiage in the final documentation. Except for the present exchange, I wasn't aware that there had been any leakage outside that limited scope. But as long as that cat now appears to be out of the bag, the warrant for homoglyph/synoglyph was taken from the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homoglyph. Which, dare I say it, is likely to be a more frequently referenced source by our target audience than is the OED.

2012 November 29, Jan Egil Kristiansen, “The case for Faroese Letters under the Faroese ccTLD .fo”, in Styrheim Tech:
-
Suggestion for .FO / Allow US-ASCII extended with Faroese language and names: a á b c d ð e é ë f g h i í j k l m n o ó p q r s t u ú ü v w x y ý z æ ø ö – 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 / The synoglyph pair ø/ö poses the same problem in Faroese as in Danish. Still, it would make sense to have norröna.fo be the ferry, while norrøna.fo could be the local reseller of the Norwegian backpacks. Maybe Danish should be defined as a minority language, that should require the addition of 'å'. Personally I'd like to see Runic and Norse Latin supported, but I guess that's not very important. In the Faroes, the Runes might be ᛆᛒᛑᛂᚠᚵᚼᛁᚴᛚᛘᚿᚫᛔᚱᛋᛏᚢᚡᚤᛅᚯᚦ. While Norse might require ǫ, ō,and þ – there are people who know more about that than me. A final note: While Faroese letters are not yet allowed directly below the .fo domain, there is no problem in subdomains. E.g. the Faroese parliament: løgtingið.gov.fo.
