Borrowed from Spanish or Portuguese cambio.
From cambium (“exchange”) + -ō (verb-forming suffix), the first element of Gaulish origin. Attested in this form from the 5th century CE, but also found earlier in the fourth-conjugation form cambiō, cambīre.
cambiō (present infinitive cambiāre, perfect active cambiāvī); first conjugation, no passive, no supine stem (Late Latin)
