     There lurks, we fear, the old Protestant Romaphobia, which will not allow him to speak boldly on the subject. If, then, this power is really given, is it not given to be used? and is not the disuse of this power a fearful withholding of the means of pardon from the faithful?

     Sporadic cases of this distressing disease are always about and epidemics occur from time to time. Frothing at the mouth is a frequent symptom in speech about Romanists. It is well to have an antidote or two at hand. When the virus has been injected this phobia cannot be warded off by main strength or by absent treatment. The writer well remembers that once when he was a lad a rumor floated through the Ohio countryside that on a certain date not far away the Roman Catholics were going to rise up and put to death all Protestants. A cousin whose father, a 250-pound blacksmith, was away from home wanted to go after him at once, saying that he thought his father "would be a good breastworks." Equally good suggestions have often been made by grown people. What is the scientific, Pasteur treatment? First of all, remember that it is a phobia, a fear. Fear is the most deadly thing in spiritual life. Nine-tenths of the spooks we fear have no reality. How innocent is the water of hydrophobia! The vast majority of Roman Catholics are not blood-thirsty ogres. They are as trustworthy and kindly as the average human being. They are about as deeply tinged with good-will as are the so-called Protestants taken as a whole. Jesuitical acrimony exists on both sides, but it is exceptional. […] Certain poisons are of such a character that the only safe way is to take the antidote before taking the poison. The sure cure for Romaphobia is the sweat cure. Work with all your might for Romanists. Love them, pray and yearn for them. The final antidote for Romaphobia and other phobias is faith in the living God. He has neither died nor retired into Nirvana. The Holy Spirit is leading men into the truth with pervasive, irresistible energy.
