Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings in various localities around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, such as politics, books, games, movies, health, pets, careers or hobbies. Users enter their ZIP code (or their city outside the United States) and the topic they want to meet about, and the website helps them arrange a place and time to meet. Topic listings are also available for users who only enter a location. Meetup.com was founded in 2001 by Scott Heiferman, Matt Meeker and Peter Kamali. In January 2011 Meetup introduced previously unannounced fundamental design changes, including a new layout, the amending of a large number of group management functions, and the removal of pre-existing functionality. Many Meetup organizers demanded the website be reverted to its old format. They described the new format as unfriendly, nonfunctional and illegible. Many threatened to leave Meetup for alternative social networking websites. Competing social sites are attempting to tap into this "revolt" [1]
