From Proto-Indo-European *sh₂tis (“satiation, satisfaction”), from *seh₂- (“to satiate, be satisfied”). Cognates include Sanskrit असिन्व (asinvá, “insatiable”), Ancient Greek ἄω (áō, “to satiate”) and 古期英語 sæd (“full, sated”) (English sad).
