- (history) A general of the Byzantine Empire, who was instrumental to Emperor Justinian's ambitious project of reconquering much of the Mediterranean territory of the former Western Roman Empire, which had been lost less than a century previously.
語源
Borrowed from Byzantine Greek Βελισάριος (Belisários), of Paleo-Balkan origin. Given that Belisarius was born in Germaneia, a town on the borders of Thrace, the Romanian linguist Ioan I. Russu proposes a Thracian origin, analyzing it as a compound of *bel- (“shining, white; strong”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (“to shine, flash, burn”) or *bel- (“power, strength”), and *sara (“stream, river, flowing water”), from Proto-Indo-European *ser- (“to flow, run”). This latter element is attested in other Ancient Greek names of Thracian origin, such as Καμασαρύη (Kamasarúē), Μαιωσάρα (Maiōsára), and Μηδισάρσα (Mēdisársa).
