     Æstho-physiology has a position that is entirely unique. It belongs neither to the objective world nor the subjective world; but taking a term from each, occupies itself with the correlation of the two.

     [Erasmus Darwin] was no professional scientist, but a man whose life had been immersed in scientific and philosophic studies and who had been the constant companion of illustrious scientists. Nor was he a professional writer or critic, but a man with a wide knowledge of poetry both classic and English, and a thorough familiarity with aesthophysiology, the historical method of criticism of the eighteenth century.
