   • 1892, Onésime Reclus, translated by Malvina Antoinette Howe, A bird's-eye view of the world, Boston: Ticknor and Company, page 128:

     In Flanders, there has grown up a young literature, enthusiastic for the extirpation from Flemish soil of all that is in any way related to the French language; but, in spite of this revival of the Flemishizing spirit, the proportion of the languages is slowly changing in favor of the French: the Walloon provinces are more prolific, and the hundreds of thousands of Flemings who travel back and forth between France and Belgium learn more or less French in the great manufacturing cities of northern France.
