• Manmode suggests an older and more masculine appearance than boymode.
• Connotation varies depending on the gender identity of the subject:
  • A trans woman or transfeminine person who manmodes is not only hiding her gender identity via presenting in boymode, but is also (typically) self-deprecating her appearance or ability to pass. There are strong negative connotations compared to the more neutral boymode.
  • A trans man or transmasculine person who manmodes is typically presenting in a way that is affirming to his gender identity. There are positive connotations to this usage.
  • Rarely is the term applied to cisgender people. Typically it is only used in instances where the person does not normally present as a masculine or male adult.
