語源

A merger of two closely related verbs:

• 古期英語 spellian (“to speak, tell, discourse”), from Proto-West Germanic *spellōn, from Proto-Germanic *spellōną.
• Old French espeler (“to spell, signify”), from Frankish *spelōn, ultimately from the same Proto-Germanic root.

As the native word reduced its infinitive suffix to -en (or retained -ien in conservative dialects), the French borrowing readily assimilated into the identical paradigm.
