"on the other hand"は、二つの事柄を比較する際に使われる表現である。一つの事柄を述べた後、それと対照的な事柄を述べる際に用いられる。
first, secondly, finallyなどの順序を示す表現と一緒に使われることが多い。
1. He is very intelligent, on the other hand, he is lazy.(彼はとても頭が良い。一方、彼は怠け者である。)
2. On the other hand, some people believe that it is not necessary.(一方、それは必要ないと考える人もいる。)
3. I like the taste of the cake, on the other hand, it is too sweet for me.(私はそのケーキの味が好きだ。一方、それは私にとって甘すぎる。)
"meanwhile"は、一つの事象が進行中に、別の事象が同時に進行していることを示す表現である。一つの事象を述べた後、それとは別の場所や状況で同時に進行している事象を述べる際に用いられる。
while, during, at the same timeなどの同時性を示す表現と一緒に使われることが多い。
1. I was cooking dinner, meanwhile, my husband was watching TV.(私は夕食を作っていた。一方、夫はテレビを見ていた。)
2. She was studying for the exam, meanwhile, her brother was playing video games.(彼女は試験勉強をしていた。一方、彼女の兄はビデオゲームをしていた。)
3. He was working in the office, meanwhile, his wife was shopping at the mall.(彼はオフィスで働いていた。一方、彼の妻はモールで買い物をしていた。)
"in contrast"は、二つの事柄が対照的であることを示す表現である。一つの事柄を述べた後、それとは対照的な事柄を述べる際に用いられる。
compared to, unlike, as opposed toなどの比較を示す表現と一緒に使われることが多い。
1. The weather today is sunny, in contrast, it was raining yesterday.(今日の天気は晴れだ。一方、昨日は雨だった。)
2. He is always calm, in contrast, his brother is very emotional.(彼はいつも落ち着いている。一方、彼の兄はとても感情的だ。)
3. The northern part of the country is very cold, in contrast, the southern part is warm.(その国の北部はとても寒い。一方、南部は暖かい。)
